Dave’s Mother, “Grandma Libby”

Just in time for Easter Sunday, we wanted to share a special family recipe with you… Dave’s mother’s famous chocolate cake! Originally titled “David’s Chocolate Cake” by his mother, the cake took on the name of Grandma’s Famous Chocolate Cake after grandchildren were born into the family. We hope you’ll try this wonderful recipe and enjoy! Happy Easter!

CAKE INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 stick butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 lb hershey’s chocolate syrup

ICING INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
  • ½ cup chocolate chips
  • Nuts if desired (our family did not use nuts in our recipe)

DIRECTIONS

Original recipe.

Preheat Oven to 350 degrees.

Cake Pan Size: 13 x 9 x 2

Cake: Sift together flour and baking powder and set aside. Cream together sugar and butter. Add eggs 1 at a time, mixing well after each. Add vanilla to butter mixture. Alternately add flour mixture and chocolate syrup. Blend well and pour into the greased and floured cake pan. Bake for 35-40 minutes.

Icing – Begin icing 5 minutes before cake is due out of the oven. In a saucepan, combine sugar, butter, and evaporated milk and bring to boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute (do not overcook). Remove from heat and add chocolate chips. Mix until the chips are dissolved. Pour over hot cake. Sprinkle with nuts if desired.
