  2. Population<\/strong> – An estimated 2.5 million people lived in the nation in July 1776. As of the latest count, about 331.9 million people live in the U.S., according to the\u00a0United States Census.<\/li>\n
  3. The Three<\/strong> – Three presidents who signed the Declaration of Independence died on July 4th<\/sup>. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826 (the 50th\u00a0anniversary of the country’s independence). James Monroe died five years later on July 4, 1831.<\/li>\n
  4. Tolling of the Bell<\/strong> – The Liberty Bell rings 13 times every Independence Day to honor the 13 original states. Descendants of people who signed the Declaration of Independence tap the bell, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 2 p.m. eastern time every 4th of July.<\/li>\n
  5. Big Booms<\/strong> – Americans spend over $1 billion on fireworks every year. According to the\u00a0American Pyrotechnics Association, the numbers continue to go up every year. The biggest celebration is the\u00a0Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks show, which takes over 8,000 hours to prepare!<\/li>\n
  6. 50 Star Flag<\/strong> – The designer of the 50-star flag Lived in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1958, a history teacher assigned a class assignment to redesign the national flag as both Alaska and Hawaii neared statehood. Robert G. Heft, who was 16 at the time, designed a new flag\u00a0using the old 48-star flag and $2.87 worth of blue cloth and white iron-on material. His design earned him a B-minus to which he challenged by sending it to Washington D.C. to be considered by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.\u00a0According to his obituary, Heft was one of thousands to submit a flag design but he was the only person who actually stitched together a flag and shipped it to D.C.\u00a0Once the flag was selected, Heft’s grade was rightfully changed to an A.\u00a0His design became the official flag in 1960.<\/li>\n
  7. How Old?<\/strong> – The average age of the signers was 45 years. Of the 56 signers, the\u00a0youngest signers, Thomas Lynch Jr. and Edward Rutledge of South Carolina, were only 26. However, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania was\u00a0the oldest signer\u00a0at 70 years old.<\/li>\n
  8. A Double Dose<\/strong> – In 1778,\u00a0George Washington\u00a0gave his soldiers\u00a0a double ration of\u00a0rum\u00a0to celebrate the July 4 holiday.<\/li>\n
  9. 1776 Feet<\/strong> – One World Trade Center in New York is 1,776 feet tall to\u00a0mark the year\u00a0the U.S. declared its independence from Britain.<\/li>\n
