But in 2022,\u00a0Secure 2.0\u00a0raised the age to 73, which started in 2023.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"BoxInline-ArticleBody-6\" data-module=\"mps-slot\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8220;The RMD rules for inherited individual retirement accounts\u00a0are even more complicated, prompting the IRS to\u00a0waive penalties\u00a0for missed RMDs over the past couple of years.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re crazy,\u201d said IRA expert and certified public accountant Ed Slott, describing the new RMD rules. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t need an engineering degree to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For 2023, RMDs apply to both pretax and Roth 401(k) accounts, along with other workplace plans. The mandatory withdrawals also apply to most IRAs, but there are no RMDs for Roth IRAs until after the account owner\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you skip your yearly RMD or don\u2019t withdraw enough, there\u2019s a 25% penalty on the amount you should have withdrawn. You can reduce the penalty to 10% if the RMD is \u201ctimely corrected\u201d within two years, according to the IRS.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can request a penalty waiver from the IRS by filling out Form 5329\u00a0and attaching a letter of explanation.
