Starting in 2026, those catch-ups will have to be designated as after-tax Roth contributions instead of regular 401(k) ones.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The switch is more than a mere name change, as traditional 401(k) and <a href=\"https:\/\/moneywise.com\/retirement\/retirement\/roth-ira\">Roth IRA<\/a>\u00a0accounts are very different retirement vehicles with distinctly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/moneywise.com\/retirement\/roth-ira-vs-401k\">different tax advantages<\/a>\u00a0and considerations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Employer-sponsored 401(k) accounts have become a default retirement vehicle for millions of American workers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2023\/retirement-plans-for-workers-in-private-industry-and-state-and-local-government-in-2022.htm\">Nearly 70 %<\/a>\u00a0of Americans working in the private sector had access to employer-sponsord retirement plans as of March 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, only 52% of private-sector workers take advantage of them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The set-it-and-forget-it approach of 401(k)s provides employees with a <a href=\"https:\/\/moneywise.com\/retirement\/paving-the-path-to-becoming-a-401k-millionaire\">sure and steady wealth-builder<\/a>. The focus on pre-tax contributions also lowers the contributor\u2019s taxable income, though that tax bill is kicked down the road to retirement when withdrawals from 401(k)s become taxable events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Roths are different.
