Today, we honor Tracey Labass for her service as a firefighter and medic. We recently had the pleasure of asking Tracey about her service and hope you enjoy our short question and answer session.
- What type of first responder do/did you serve as? “I served as a firefighter and medic.”
- What is/was your title? “My title was Battalion Chief.”
- What is the organization’s official name? “My time as a firefighter and medic was spent with the Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue.”
- What are your most fond memories from your service as a first responder? “My most fond memories of working as a firefighter and medic were working as a team to stabilize an emergency and making someone’s worst day just a little better.”
- Are there any special stories you’d like to tell about your time while serving? “While I have many memories of emergency calls that have stuck out for one reason or another, one incident has touched my life more than any. I was called to a head-on accident in the early morning and my job was to tend to the female driver. During the course of her care, I found a gold cross on her chest that no longer had a chain attached. I secured the cross with the intent on mailing it back to her so it would not get lost during transport to the trauma center. After returning home in the morning , I taped the cross to a card with a small message wishing her a speedy recovery. Approximately two weeks later, I received a request from the patient’s family member to meet the crew that had tended to their daughter/sister. We learned that Marina had not survived her accident. Meeting over a dozen family members who where touched that our crew had cared for Marina was both heart breaking and therapeutic for all of us. While Marina was not present, stories were shared that allowed everyone to know her a little bit better. Over that last twenty years, I have attended christenings, graduations, BBQs and even dance recitals with Marinas extended family. I have enjoyed every minute of it.”
We are forever thankful to Tracey and her entire team for their contribution to protecting and serving the residents of Prince William County.
